Belief vs. Fact

Mark Twain once said, “It's easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.” I was listening to this podcast, and it got me thinking about the reality that so many people are walking around with beliefs which they consider “Truth” with a capital “T.” Sometimes even intelligent, educated people seem to be locked into belief-driven mindsets which prevent them from changing their views despite overwhelming evidence. In the past few years, climate change denial has appeared as a topic of study in social psychology circles. Despite the overwhelming evidence of global climate change, there [...]

A Watchtower Tragedy

This week, a 27-year old member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Canada lost her life because of her refusal to accept a life-saving blood transfusion. Éloïse Dupuis was admitted to the hospital after her planned home birth resulted in complications. She was immediately given a Caesarean section and her baby was saved. However, during the birth, Éloïse lost a substantial amount of blood. Sources say that because she was a Witness, Éloïse refused the life-saving blood transfusion and died. Her child is now motherless. When I read about this tragic story, I thought about the people I have counseled [...]

Does Trump Display the Stereotypical Profile of a Cult Leader?

There are many reasons to be saddened, disgusted, confused, outraged, scared, and even traumatized by Trump’s presidential campaign. He has just declared a “scorched earth policy” and is saying there is an “international conspiracy that is persecuting him” and he is just a “martyr for the cause of America.”In studying cults and their leaders for 40 years, certain patterns consistently are evident in their words and behaviors. Based on my own experience being near Sun Myung Moon (him too a billionaire, claimed to be the Messiah and 10 times greater than Jesus Christ), I wish to offer a way of [...]

Robert Jay Lifton MD: An Interview with a Genius

As this year marks the 40th anniversary of the day I left the Moonies, I want to take some time to acknowledge an individual who played an important role in my personal and professional development. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing the famous psychiatrist and my mentor, Robert Jay Lifton. I was first introduced to Lifton’s 1961 book on brainwashing, Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism, during my deprogramming in May of 1976. It helped me understand that the tactics used by the Moonies to indoctrinate me were the same used by Communist China and other cults [...]
